SC0127
This long sword sword has a 28 inch blade and with a deep sori (curvette)
It was original a tachi, probably shortened during Edo era to meet the requirement imposed by the shogun. The smith's signature could have been cut off when it was shortened or may have been made unsigned.
Muromachi era was a period of civil war with battles being fought all over Japan. Swords were in great demand and all the smiths were kept busy churning out many sturdy swords for battle and mostly were mumei.
A Muromachi era sword in excellent condition would be considered as rare and probably belonged to a high ranking samurai in command of battle formation and seldom used in actual battle. See example SC0121.
It was remounted into a gunto mount when the owner was enlisted into the army to serve the emperor during WW2.
It has been cleaned up and remounted back into an Edo period koshirae.
Despite its age, the curvy blade is very robust with slight age wear and still very sharp.
