Antique samurai Tachi with superb koshirae by Munetsugu

Beautiful Japanese Tachi sword with gilted leather scabbard. Signed Bizen no Suke Munetsugu.

A Tachi mounted in Archaic Style Koshirae, signed Bizen no Suke Munetsugu, Shin-Shinto

Munetsugu worked as a retained swordsmith of Lord Matsudaira of the Kuwana family.

In the second year of Koka (1845) he received the title of Bizen no Suke. It is believed that he was given this title because of his expertise in producing swords in the Bizen tradition. True to the Bizen tradition, most of his blades display a choji-gunome midare hamon done in nioi deki. There are also some works that are made in suguha to emulate the Ko-Aoe style of workmanship. He produced many fine blades from around 1830 up until the beginning of Meiji. His works done in the Tenpo era (1830-1845) are considered some of his best.

The blade with one mekugi-ana, suguha hamon of nie, nashiji hada, the tsuka wrapped in red silk brocade decorated with flowers in gold and bound with rattan, the fuchi and kabuto-gan of copper and aoi-shaped shakudo tsuba with gilt dai-seppa, the saya en suite with the tsuka with leather ashi

The fuchi and kabuto-gane are copper.

Blade is 27 1/2" long including habaki. 39 1/2" overall.

Due to age wear, the saya bamboo interleaving and silk cover have some minor age wear.

Blade is in excellent condition and in old polish.
