A very beautiful and well made Tanto in design of tree trunk with an army of gold ants on it. The blade bears the signature of "KINJU KANESHIGE" (gimei).
As this tanto doesn't have the work characteristic of the great master, it's most likely a late edo made and incised with the name of "Kinju"
The edo period scabbard is made in the design of a tree bark with an army of golden ants on it. Tips are made of ivory color changed with age. Overall a very beautifully made Tanto.
The blade measures 75/16 and tip to tip is 103/4 inches and in overall excellent condition despite its age.
