Provenance: This vase was presented to The Cheltenham College, London in 1914 by the Chinese Ambassador as a gift from President Yuan Shikai whose sons were studying at the Colledge. It was mistakenly dated as a Hongxian period piece and was later acquired by The Weishaupt Collection.
This form of vase is recorded in "Zaobanchu, Imperial Office Of Works" and it is stated that Qianlong Emperor gave the instruction for this vase to be unmarked and the reason was unknown.
The information , together with the picture of this vase was featured in an article by Julian Thompson, in Arts Of Asia, Jan-Feb 2002 issue. Further information of this vase was again mentioned in Sotheby's Hong Kong Auction catalogue, October 23, 2005, that Emperor Qianlong was particularly fond of this vase as he had his picture taken with it prominently displayed in the "Protrait of Qianlong",painted by Giuseppe Castigione.
The said painting is in the Palace Museum in Beijing. Its picture and more information are available in the "Dictionary of Chinese Ceramics by Wang Qingzhen".
There are 2 old stickers:176" which was probably the inventory number of The Cheltenham College and another sticker that says"Weishaupt 802" which again was the inventory number of The Weishaupt Collection". There is also a Sotheyby's sale tag lot no. 182. This vase was sold in 1995 at Amsterdam by Sotheby's.
