RVM 4130

Rolex Moonphase, ref. 8171, 18k yellow gold, automatic, made in 1950s

In the 1950s, Rolex produced 2 models of automatic wristwatches, ref. 6062 and ref. 8171 with functions showing phases of the moon, month, day and date. Ref. 6062 has a water-resistant Oyster case and ref. 8171 has a snap on case. Both were produced in small numbers in pink gold, yellow gold and steel. Due to its non-water resistant case, many dials of the ref. 8171 dials are found to be in bad condition and most back cases of the steel pieces are corroded. Though ref. 8171 is stated in a watch book as rarer than the Oyster model, it has all the while played second fiddle to ref. 6062. At many auctions, gold examples of this reference were sold at the lower estimated price or were unsold but at recent auctions, the steel pieces with original dials did extremely well but not the gold...it is something that I have always wondered why. This watch comes with a very nicely aged original dial. Before the construction of our website, we had sold a pink gold 8171 with an original dial to a collector in Hong Kong, together with many of our rarer pieces consisting of a hunter case prince, a gold 6236, couple of 6238, an unused vintage Paneria, a vintage Rolex gold Paul Newman Daytona.... just naming a few. These pieces have appreciated a lot in value and we would like to take this opportunity to thank our valued client, Mr. D for the business.
