Rolex ref. 6062, steel
In the 1950s, Rolex produced two triple calendar models, ref.8171 & ref.6062 with a moonphase complication.
Ref. 6062 features an Oyster water-resistant case. Ref. 8171 has a snap-on case back and is not water-resistant.
According to several sources, Rolex produced approximately 650 examples in yellow gold, 50 in pink gold, and very few in stainless steel. Of the known Ref. 6062 examples on the market, mostly are yellow gold.
The pink gold example I sold had “6063” stamped inside the case back.
According to records from case makers Genex and Charles René Spillmann, a very small number of two-tone cases were also produced. I once encountered a two-tone Ref. 8171 with a steel case and gold bezel. Due to limited information at the time, I did not purchase it.
Over the past 35 years, I have sold three yellow gold examples {one with a star dial}, one pink gold example with a star dial, one steel example with a married star dial, and two loose movements. The watch featured here was sold to a Japanese friend, and I reacquired it 25 years ago.
Early Rolex production had many inconsistencies. It is widely believed that M/S Rolex was less organized in its early years and did not maintain comprehensive records. I wrote to Rolex Geneva regarding the production numbers for steel pieces and received the reply: “It’s confidential.”
This watch runs perfectly and comes with an original vintage Rolex Jubilee bracelet. The factory engravings “Registered Design & Modèle Déposé” are still clearly visible on the case back.
Many rare watches passed through my hands and l would say, Rolex ref. 6062 is emotionally, closest to my heart.
