A hefty super wide and heavy Army officer sword.

A hefty Japanese Army officer's sword in combat mountings.

The blade is signed "Hyuga koku ju Yoshihira saku ", shinogi-zukuri shape, WWll time period ca.1940 era made blade.

Yoshihira's real name is Osaki Taihei, was born in 1902 in Ebino city, Miyazaki prefecture, he studied under Kawashima Tadayoshi made swords during WWll time and after the war as a Gendai sword smith. The blade is traditional hand forged, in old polish, shows fine scratches and in excellent condition. The temper line is kogunome-choji temper pattern and has deep temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and cutting edge is very sharp. It is mounted in a leather covered wood scabbard. It measures 27+1/4" tip to the guard, 26+1/2" cutting edge, 1+7/16" width, 7.5 mm thickness at the notch and 38+1/4" in mountings.

This looks like a custom ordered as the blade is super wide and heavy made for someone with with strong hands.

From the overall condition of the sword, its owner is a high ranking commanding officer and not involved in field action.
