SC0034

A handachi with a well forged star stamped blade.

A fine star stamped blade in a late Edo handachi koshirae.

The blade was made during WW2 and a star blade means it was traditionally made an army appointed smith with tamahagane. The smith in order to be qualified to have his blade stamped with a star, has to go through lots of tests by the board of military examiners and therefore, all star stamped blades are finely forged.

The signature "TANAKA ISSAI" of the smith is chiseled on the tang and it means "one cut". During Showa era, it is not uncommon that smiths used several names.

The hefty 62.5cm blade has lots of activities on its hamon and is razor sharp. Comparing to other star stamped swords, this is extremely well forged.

The handachi koshirae is from late edo period in in good condition with some restoration to the silk fabric covering of the saya.
